National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia

National Assembly building with the sculpture group “Play of the black horses” is one of the most beautiful buildings in the center of Belgrade. The construction lasted long, almost 30 years, mainly because of lack of finances and wars and even because of misunderstanding in society. Happily it was finally decided that the building would be built in the style of monumental public buildings of that time. In 1936 the splendid building of the Assembly was finished. The edifice is built in academic traditionalism style, luxurious interiors are done by famous craftsmen and artists. Assembly has political along with cultural and historical importance.

National Assembly of Serbia was built nearby the place where in 1830 National Parliament meeting had been organized. During that meeting Prince Miloš was recognized as successor to the throne which had a great importance for future independence of Serbia. The building hosted Parliaments of four different states and witnessed the end of Yugoslavia and Overthrow of Slobodan Milosević on the 5th of October 2000, when during massive demonstrations (about 1 million people) the building was damaged. After the last restoration the building got back its original look from 1936.
