Belgrade in the First World War

Walking around city center of Belgrade we’ll visit the most famous buildings and monuments from World War I and talk about causes and consequences of the Great War.

Slavija Square

We’ll start the story from the Slavija Square walking to the corner of Krunska and Svetozar Marković Streets, where Austro-Hungarian Council used to be locates. At this very place former Russian ambassador Hartvig tried to prevent Vienna’s showdown with Serbia. We’ll mention how Sarajevo assassination was used as the reason to start a war with Serbia. After we’ll go to Pioneer Park, former Court Park, with the observation hill stones that Commander-in-chief used to observe Thessaloniki battle-front, and then pass by Courts that now host Presidency and City Parliament.

Terazije Square

The tour then leads to Terazije Square and Palace of Krsmanović, once described as „small neo-baroque palace and one of the most beautiful monuments of this kind in Serbia. In this palace on the 1st of December 1918 the Union of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians was proclaimed and State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs was formed. Nearby Viktorić Pharmacy, that had an important role in street battles of 1914 is located along with Hotel Moscow, meeting place of „Black Hand“ organization.

Zeleni Venac

From Terazije we go down to Zeleni Venac area, where Gavrilo Princip and his friends from Mlada Bosna used to meet. The story then leads us to Topličinom Venac, where today’s park used to be Austro-Hungarian cemetery that died in street fights in 1915. Nowadays this park hosts monument to Vojvoda Vuk, commander of Yugoslavian volunteers from the whole world. Lunch time.

Kalemegdan

We’ll walk to Kosančićev Venac and on our way to Kalemegdan we’ll get to observation area with the view on Karađorđeva Street and pier where first victims of the Great War died.

At Kalemegdan you may see Monument of Gratitude to France and then Ružica Church, former garrison church with the tomb of Serbian soldiers died during the defense of the capital.
