Serbian National Theater

Serbian National Theater is founded  in 1861 during a conference of the Serbian National Theater Society, composed of members of the Serbian Reading Room (Srpska čitaonica) headed by Svetozar Miletić. It is the first theater that used south-Slavic languages during its performances. Opera of the Theater was found in 1947 while the Ballet department was created in 1950. Nowadays Serbian National Theater includes: Opera, Drama and Ballet troupes. Serbian National Theater initiated organization of Theater Festival „Sterijino pozorje” devoted to Serbian playwright Jovan Sterija Popović in 1956 which is the oldest and most representative theater festival in Serbia.

During the 120th season the Theater received a new building and since 28th of March 1981 is located there. This day since then is „Day of Serbian National Theater“ when the best performances are nominated and Theater’s operational results are summed. When the new building was opened, a monument to Pera Dobrinović, famous Serbian actor, was unveiled – this is the first monument to an actor in ex-Yugoslavia. The new – white marble –building in the center of Novi Sad is 20 000 m² big and has the biggest scene in Serbia.
