Saint Teresa of Avila Cathedral

Saint Teresa of Avila Cathedral or how the locals call it „The Big Church“ is the biggest Church in Subotica and Cathedral of the city. It was built in the end of the 18th century and is devoted to Subotica’s patron Saint Teresa of Avila, one of the key-figures of Catholic reformation. The cult of Teresa was popular since the very foundation of the city – her face was put on the stamp and coat of arms of Subotica.

The Church building was finished in 1783 and nowadays the Cathedral is a monumental late baroque sacral building with two big towers and minimal decorations at windows and pilasters. The main altar was finished in 1804 and clock was installed in one of the towers in 1840. Since 1973 the Cathedral is protected by the Organization for cultural monuments preservation.
