Royal Compound
Royal Compound of 130 hectares in the elite district of Belgrade called Dedinje is the official residence of Serbian Royal family of Karađorđić. Impressive park arranged by Édouard François André, director of Versailles Park at that time, accentuates the beauty of two residential buildings and of the Church of St. Andrew. Karađorđević family had used the Palace before World War the II started, after its end Josip Broz Tito lived the White Palace for guests reception.
When entering at the main gate you will see the Royal Palace, built in 1929 of white stone in Serbian-Byzantine style. Blue salon, royal dining-room, discreet garden, wedding gifts salon, study of king Aleksandar are just several of luxurious rooms of the palace, full of art of Nicolas Poussin, Andrea di Aloigi, Charles Le Brun, Ivan Meštrović. The main attraction of the Royal Palace is the hall of the royal cellar often called „little Kremlin“ as the vaults and walls of it are painted with motives of the Fire-bird and Serbian epic poetry.
Near the Royal Palace the White Palace is located. Building of the White Palace started in 1934 according to the project of famous architect Aleksandar Đorđević. The idea of King Aleksandar I was that his sons would use the Palace when they grow up, but, unfortunately, he didn’t live to see that happening as he was assassinated in Marseille two month before the beginning of construction works. The classicism building was finished in 1937 and luxurious inner decoration was done as well. Ground-floor hosts a big hall and several salons decorated in Louis XV and Louis XVI style with Venetian chandeliers and a collection of exceptional paintings of Rembrandt, Antonio Canaletto, Sébastien Bourdon, Eugène Fromentin, Đura Jakšić. Royal library has a collection of more than 35.000 books; Ceremonial dining-room is designed in Chippendale style.
