Niš

NNiš is one of the oldest cities in Serbia and maybe most famous as the place of birth of Constantine the Great, a Roman Emperor. Niš is situated in southern Serbia, at the crossroad of the West and Middle East pathways, which is why it is called the “East and West Gates”. Throughout the centuries, the influence of various nations and cultures have been shaping Niš, resulting in numerous cultural and historical monuments at the city’s territory and suburbs. A walk around modern Niš – Niš Castle, the antique settlement Mediana and the Skull Tower Ćele kula – is a journey through centuries in time and the vivid history of Niš.

Niš is situated on the banks of the river Nišava, being the third largest city in Serbia with a population of 250.000 people. Niš is quite popular among tourists, being only two hours away from Belgrade by car, and well connected to several European cities with direct flights from the airport “Constantine the Great”. There is a spa-resort close to Niš called Niška Banja where you can have a rest after the long walks around town. Every August, Niš turns into the capital of European jazz with its annual festival Nišville. During the summer, this city is full of tourists so don’t be surprised when you hear all of the languages of the world during your walk around the little street of Kazandžijsko sokače or antique Mediana: just enjoy the harmony and the spirit of Europe.
