Zemun – walking tour
Located on the bank of Danube, Zemun, one of the oldest parts of Belgrade, which always differed from the rest of the city. It had been conquered by numerous armies, robbed and burnt by famous and unknown commanders, it was economically flourishing and survived a plague epidemic. In the mid of the 20th century Zemun and New Belgrade started to develop and nowadays nobody knows where the border between those two city areas is.
Centre and Zemun quay
The meeting with Zemun starts at the Main post office. It was built in 1896 and represents one of the most important public buildings that marked the historical and urban character of Zemun’s downtown. We’ll walk via Square of Magistrate and then through Gospodska Street and Massaryk Square and finally reach the river, surely the most beautiful place in Zemun. Numerous restaurants with nice patios and terraces, cafes and taverns and the Danube quay create a special ambient. You may feel the Bohemian spirit of the streets, the smell of fish dishes and be teased with local restaurant’s delights.
Gardoš
We continue to Gardoš hill and the most famous symbol of Zemun – the Millennium Tower or as locals call it Tower of Sibinjanin Janko. It offers a view over Danube and almost the whole Belgrade. On the return from Gardoš we’ll pass by Nikolaj Church, the most important Serbian church in Zemun, and then the tour goes near the House of Karamatin, the most beautiful baroque building in Zemun, and finally reaches the famous „White Bear“ – the oldest building in Zemun and the only Balkan-style house in that part of Belgrade.
Opera house Madlenianum
In the main street, the only Opera house in Belgrade „Madlenianum” is located. It was opened in 1998 in the building of a former theater. On our way to the City Park we’ll pass the Franciscan Church of St. John the Baptist with the monastery, the only one left in Belgrade. The tour ends at the building of Air Force Command Headquarters that was built in 1935 as one of the most important edifices of modern Yugoslavian architecture.
