Prince Miloš Residence

In a picturesque part of Topčider Park, not so far away from the city center the Residence of prince Miloš Obrenović, prominent Serbian ruler of the 19th century, is located. This is now one of the most favorite places of Belgrade residents either because of shadowy platanus parks or numerous restaurant of traditional restaurant.

After finishing residence for his wife and children (Princess Ljubica’s Residence in the center of Belgrade) Prince Miloš Obrenović decided to build his residence far from the Fortress which at that time was under Turks. The Residence was built in 1831 in Ottoman style and at that time it was only the third buildings that Serbs built in Belgrade. Though the Residence is not so big it was attracting a lot of attention of locals. Its interior is exceptionally rich and splendor and represented a mixture of oriental and traditional Serbian style. Prince Miloš used to pass a lot of time in the Residence and died here in 1860. Later the Residence was the Museum of Miloš and Mihailo Obrenović, whose оbjects were used for forming funds of Historical Museum of Serbia in 1963. Nowadays in Prince Miloš Residence two exhibitions are in function: „Life in Serbia in the 19th century“ and „Miloš Obrenović – dynasty, history, myth“. One of the oldest European platanus grows in front of the Residence. It is more than 160 years old and is protected by the government.
