Koviljača Spa
Koviljača spa is one of the most famous and beautiful spa centers in Serbia located in Western part of the country on the banks of Drina and at the bottom of Gučevo Mountain. Koviljača is located about 140 km away from Belgrade and the closest airport in the vicinity of Loznica town. The spa is located at the altitude of 128 m in the region rich with forests and waters and pleasant climate. This fact and, surely, therapeutic effect of Koviljača water create a perfect medical and relaxation center.
The history of spa dates back to Romans that settled here. During the Middle Age spa was called „Stinky“ because of specific smell of sulfur. In 1720 Turks built here first bathhouses and before that they had used local medical mud. In 1836 Serbian authorities got the mineral spring under their control, dried the swamps nearby and started a rational use of water. In the beginning of the 20th century sulfur bath was built and the Koviljača spa appeared at European map of spa-resorts.
Koviljača spa has one of the biggest parks in Serbia, it covers 40 hectares of surface. The most spread species of trees are horn beams, beech and oak, so walks in this park are healing as well. The Drina river nearby also offers fishing and rowing, Gučevo mountain has special walking tracks. Medical sulfur water of the spa has the temperature from +15 to +28°C and is effective for healing post-traumatic conditions, spinal operations and bones injuries, gynecological problems and rheumatism.
