King Alexander I Monument
King Alexander I Monument is situated in Niš center on King Alexander I Square. It is dedicated to one of the most famous Serbian rulers Alexander I Karađorđević from the royal dynasty Karađorđević. King Alexander I is mostly famous for proclaiming union of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians in one country shortly after the end of the First World War. He was killed in 1934 in Marseille.
Original monument to King Alexander I was unveiled in 1939 and was created by sculptor from Belgrade called Radeta Stanković, but shortly, after communist government had been established, the monument was destroyed. In 2004 citizens of Niš decided to correct this mistake and raised a new monument sculpted by Zoran Ivanović from Belgrade. The monument itself is 4,5 high, the pedestal is 7m high, and the whole construction weighs 3,3 tons.
