Kazandžijsko sokače
Kazandžijsko sokače quarter is situated in Niš at Kopitareva streets and represents one of the oldest remaining parts of Niš. At this very place Turkish quarter „Sagr Cincar mahalla“ was situated, according to urban plans of Niš from 1878. Turkish word “sagr” means “craftsman” which means that during the Ottoman era this place was a craftsmen quarter.
One of the most developed crafts at that time was coppersmith craft, after liberation from Turks in Serbian historical notes 13 coppersmiths are mentioned to be working in this quarter. No wonder it was called “Coppersmith’s quarter” or “Kazandžijsko sokače” in Serbian. The last coppersmith’s shops at this quarter were closed in 1990-s.
Nowadays this old and preserved quarter is full of restaurants, cafes and bars which make it the most visited parts of Niš.
