Kalenić Monastery

Kalenić

Kalenić Monastery is located on the slopes of Gledić Mountains in the vicinity of town Trstenik. Serbian medieval (nowadays female) monastery Kalenić, with the Church devoted to Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the period between 1413 and 1417 in tradition of Morava architectural school. Nowadays the Church is one the most beautiful objects of this style because of rich exterior (combination of grey stone and red brick) and interior decorations. Medieval frescoes from the beginning of 15th century were for many years hidden under layers plaster, until 1877 when they were discovered and restored.

The Monastery’s chronicles mention very important event: in 1815 ashes of Serbian king Stefan the First-Crowned were brought to Kalenić from the Monastery Fenek on Fruška Gora and stayed here till 1839 when they were moved to the Studenica Monastery and kept till today. Famous Serbian bishop Nikolaj Velimirović lived in Kalenić before the beginning of the World War I as celibate priest. The monastery is famous by the fact that every year it hosts traditional assembly Levać Meeting called “I passed Levač, I passed Šumadiju”.
