Franciscan Monastery and Church

Franciscan Monastery and Church in Subotica are the oldest buildings and the witnesses of local history. Build in the middle 18th century, the ensemble represents preserved cultural heritage of high importance. Monastery opened first school in Subotica in 1731 and the first gymnasium in 1747, soon after Higher School of rhetoric and philosophy was opened.

The Church was built in 1730 when expanding the chapel built by Franciscans in 1695. The style of the building represents a mixture of Gothic and Romanic principles. The Church is devoted to St Michael and locals call it „The Old Church“. The position of the Monastery and Church are quite important – it was the only religious center here till 1773 and was built in the Fortress territory. Nowadays the Church is situated in front of the Franciscan Church and has two monumental towers dominating here.
