City Hall
Monumental building of the City hall of Novi Sad was built in 1895 having as an example Graz City hall. Today this is the cabinet of Novi Sad’s major and one of the most beautiful buildings on the Liberty Square. Before the construction there has been a lot of political doubts about the location as Svetozar Miletić, major of that time, proposed to build Serbian National Theater. Meanwhile when the needed money was collected in 1893 the construction started according to the plan of famous Novi Sad’s architect Georg Molnar. Neo-Renaissance building is facing North-East, sides of the building are countered by two streets. Facade is looking at main city square and is decorated with Ionic and Corinthian order columns. The entire facade is also decorated with allegoric figures that symbolize different crafts. On the top of the building, the tower is located with the Bell of Saint Florian, Saint patron of Novi Sad. The bell is called Matilda after the philanthropist that presented this bell to firemen brigade. The bell served for alarming the citizens in case of fire.
