Temple of Saint Sava

Symbol and patron of the capital, impressive building seen from every part of Belgrade, is the Church of Saint Sava. The biggest Serbian Orthodox Church in located on Vračar hill plateau from where many Serbian rulers observed Belgrade and suburbs. The Church is build in Serbian-Byzantine style and nowadays represents one of the most important sight of Belgrade.

Saint Sava Church with the cupola is 70 m high, whilst the main gilded cross add extra 12 m. From east to west the Church is 91 m wide, from north to south – 81 m and can receive up to 10 000 prayers. Although it is not finished yet as it is built from donation money, even today the Church is famous for its interior. Polyphonic bells that ring every hour, sacristy and St. Sava crypt and St. Prince Lazar church are only a small part of ambitious plans of Saint Sava Church construction.

The Church is built on the place where, as supposed, Sinan Pasha in 1595 burnt relic of Saint Sava, the first Serbian archbishop whose main achievement was creating independent Serbian Orthodox Church. This historical event was depicted on frescoes of the smaller Church nearby the Church of Saint Sava. St. Sava plateau located in from of the Church is the place where dozens thousands of people gather during Orthodox holidays. From the plateau National building is seen along with the Monument to Đorđe Petrović Karađorđ, leader of the First Serbian Uprising and the founder of the Karađorđević dynasty.
