Cathedral Church
In the center of the city near the Kalemegdan Park Orthodox Church devoted to St. Archangel Michael is located. Among people the Church is known as the Cathedral Church as it is the center of Belgrade eparchy. Its history, architecture and rich iconostasis differ from other sacral objects in the city and this is why Cathedral Church is a must-see in Belgrade.
Monumental look and constructive arrangement of the Church list it among the biggest religious buildings of the 19th century when the Principality of Serbia existed. Cathedral Church has an elongated rectangular base with a narthex and a high belfry in the western part and spacious nave and semicircular apse in the eastern part. The Church is 45 m long and 19,6 m wide. Work on iconostasis was entrusted to famous sculptor Dimitrije Petrović who made a sumptuous wooden gilded iconostasis. In front of the Church’s portal, in the churchyard, two giants of Serbian philology, Dositej Obradović and Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, are buried.
