Kovačica and naïve art, Idvor, Banat farm
Kovačica
Departure from Belgrade, crossing Danube and driving through Banat valley to Kovačica. Kovačica is a mixture of different languages, religions, cultures and customs, and is often described “All Vojvodina in a small village”. Anyway the most population is Slovak, so their way of life is quite noticeable at every step in this specific village. Kovačica received international fame thanks to naive art – specific way of artistic expression. The main traces of naive art are nostalgic themes of idyllic past, street and rural life, working in fields, views of golden Banat valleys etc. People are depicted in a grotesque way: figures with giant extremities and small heads. The tradition of naive art appeared in Kovačica few years before the Second World War and the founders are Martin Jonaš, Zuzana Halupova, Jan Knjazovic, Martin Paluški, Jan Sokol and others. During the visit to Kovačica, we will go to the Gallery of this movement or “metropolis of world’s naive art”, the unique Babka Gallery founded in 1955 that was proclaimed by UNESCO “World editorial center devoted to naïve art” and violin master Jan Nemček that will tell us about the technique of hand-made stringed instruments and a couple of local houses – naive art workshops.
Idvor
After Kovačica we will proceed to Idvor, birthplace Mihajlo Pupin, world’s famous scientist. We’ll visit his house, endowment and Museum of Mihajlo Pupin that had been working for 40 years as a professor at the Columbia University in the USA. Of numerous discoveries, Pupin had patented 24 such as telephone and telegraph sets, communication wires for long distances, sound generator, wireless communication systems etc. Along with scientific exposition we will also see ethnic collection with more than 400 of objects from Banat.
Banat salaš
The excursion ends with a lunch in authentic “Banat salaš” or typical Banat farm, where you will be able to try traditional Banat cuisine and here funny stories of this valley.
