Gymnasium

Higher School, ancestor of the modern Gymnasium, was founded in 1833 and starting to work with 34 pupils and one professor. Two years later, in 1835, it received the official status of a Gymnasium. Gymnasium’s building is one of the most monumental buildings raised in Serbia in the 19th century. It was built in 1887 and since then has been known as the first Gymnasium of Serbia. On the 21st of October 1941 fascists threw many students and professors from Gymnasium rooms out to street and shot, which became one of the most tragic moments of the Second World War. One of the Gymnasium’s rooms was turned into Memorial room devoted to this terrible event.
