Synagogue

Although Subotica is called „secession city“ the only sacral building that is construction totally in the secession style is Subotica’s Synagogue, one of the most beautiful secession buildings of this region. This Synagogue is the first object built in Subotica in pure Hungarian Secession. The project of Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab was awarded in 1899 and Jewish community agreed it would be their Synagogue.

Subotica’s Synagogue is unique as it is the only Secession Synagogue in the world. Decorative elements of the facade, windows and interior are floral, although they were damaged with years, they still preserve an impression of skilled craft. Powerful cupolas of the Synagoge decorated with green, blue and ochre Zsolnay ceramics dominate in the view of the city. Synagogue is the cultural monument and memorial to 4000 Jews from Subotica that were killed by fascists during the Second World War.
