Restaurant „?”

History of Bohemian Belgrade has lots of stories and long tradition. If you want to find your own Bohemian nook, feel special spirit of mehana and get lost in city’s legends, then visit famous “?”.“Question mark” is the oldest kafana (typical Balkan bistro which serves alcoholic drinks and coffee, light snacks and other food) in Serbia opened in 1823. The kafana is located in the city center across the road from the Cathedral Church. Originally the place was called „At the Cathedral Church“ but churchmen didn’t like the name as they found it offensive for church’s institute. Until the end of the trial, kafana’s owner put a name-board writing only „?” as a temporary name. This name is kept until now.

Owners of the kafana changed several times but they managed to keep old spirit and original interior that brings modern visitors back to the 19th century. Considering the restaurant was opened during the Ottoman rule, visitors of the restaurant even nowadays may sit on stools when drinking apricot or quince rakia and coffee served in Turkish cezve with Turkish delight.

This is not an ethnic restaurant but a real urban kafana with 200 years of tradition. Question mark that served to Belgrade Bohemia, artists and actors, is a must-see of modern Belgrade. The restaurant is quite often fully booked thanks to its popularity and affordable prices.
