Millennium Tower

The historical heart of Belgrade, guardian of centuries of stories and symbol of power of the former Hungarian Kingdom, Gardoš Tower is one of 4 Millennium Towers that Hungarian authorities built on the extremes of their Kingdom. The legend says that in the tower prominent Hungarian hero John Hunyadi (Serbian Janko Sibinjanin) died in the Tower, and in his honour the Tower is now famous „Sibinjanin Janko’s Tower“.

Memorial Tower was built by Hungarians in 1896 in order to commemorate 1000 years of foundation of Hungarian State in the Pannonian valley, this is why all 4 towers are called „Millennium towers“. The Tower was built on the Gardoš hill on the ruins of medieval fortress from which only side towers and defensive walls are left. The 4 identical towers were built in northern, southern, western and eastern extremes of the Hungarian Kingdom and the central one is located in Pešt. Along with Pešt Tower, Zemun’s one is the only left until now.

The Tower, 36 m high, is an exceptional observation point that has a view over the river at the mouth of flows of Sava and Danube rivers to Kalemegdan. All the year round Gardoš Tower is open for visitors that participate in cultural performances and enjoy the marvelous view.
