Avala

Mount Avala, one of the most visited places, is situated only 15 km to the south from Belgrade. The word “avala” origins from “havala” that means “observation point” for which Avala is famous for although it is only 511 m high. Monument to unknown hero is situated on the top of the mount and is devoted to victims of the I World War. Such monuments were unveiled all around Allied countries and Yugoslavia joined this action. The monument was being built for 4 years (1934-1938) and here remains of an unknown hero were buried. The monument looks like a sarcophagus and caryatids around it symbolize guard of honour. Avala Tower is also situated on the mount: it is 205 m high and is the highest and most famous construction in Serbia. The first original Tower was destroyed during NATO-aggression in 1999. New Tower was opened in 2010, 11 years after the bombing. At 119 m a restaurant is located and only 3 m high is the observation platform from where you may enjoy a view of central Serbia called Šumadija.
